The University of Arkansas Community College at Hope recently had three students from the Technical and Industrial Professions Division attend the 2013 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Attending for UACCH were, Christopher Garland from Magnolia, who competed in major appliance repair and placed 9th in the nation; Marty Flowers from Texarkana, AR, who competed in electrical construction wiring and placed 24th in the nation; and Braden Pennington from Dierks, AR, who competed in industrial motor control and placed 9th in the nation. These three represented Arkansas and UACCH very well in the competition and leadership events.
The SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference was attended by approximately 6,000 high school and college students competing in a wide variety of skill and leadership events. Of those, 3,500 of the competitors were college level students. The conference had a total of 98 different skill and leadership events in which to compete. Arkansas had 17 competitors finish in the top 5 and 36 competitors finish in the top 10 high scoring individuals in these events.
The conference also provided the competitors opportunities to participate in a number of professional development seminars. National trainers from most of the major manufacturers presented instruction on new technologies and techniques just entering the market.
SkillsUSA allows students to hone the skills they gain through the UACCH instructional programs and to showcase them in regional, state, and national competitions. The Technical and Industrial Professions Division is extremely fortunate to have these high caliber students representing UACCH on the state and national level and entering the local workforce.
