The Division of Industry Outreach & Continuing Education of the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope has entered a training partnership with Southern Refrigerated Transport, Inc. of Texarkana, AR. UACCH has agreed to provide training to potential employees of SRT to prepare them to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) so that they will be qualified to work for SRT.
SRT is the nation’s ninth largest temperature controlled trucking company that is committed to excellence. With over 1050 trucks, SRT services the temp-controlled, dry, and haz-mat transportation needs of customers in 48 states and Canada. They are committed to their employees and working to enhance our regional economy. Founded by Tony Smith in 1986 with 10 trucks, SRT is also one of the fastest growing firms in the industry.
SRT, the second largest employer in Miller County, approached UACCH during the summer of 2013 about assisting them with their training needs, specifically in the area of training drivers for their fleet, in order to meet the demand created by the high rate of growth. UACCH developed a planning team which consisted of Chancellor Chris Thomason; Dr. Jennifer Methvin, Vice- Chancellor for Academics; Randy Sanders, Dean of Technical & Industrial Professions; and Shaun Clark, Director of Industry Outreach & Continuing Education, to create a training model that best suited the needs of SRT.
Chancellor Thomason, “We are pleased with this new partnership with SRT and look forward to training these drivers. This is a great example of how UACCH-Texarkana is dedicated to working with business and industry partners in the area to provide the training or specialized education their employees need to be successful. We appreciate this opportunity to assist SRT and look forward to continuing to serve business and industry needs in Miller County and throughout our service area.”
After discussions with Tony Smith, President of SRT, Justin Smith, Chief Operating Officer, and Eric Nelson, Director of Safety and Recruiting, SRT agreed to receive CDL training from UACCH beginning January 2014, with classes that are four weeks in length. UACCH hopes to provide a total of 11 classes within the year and train over 130 people to successfully pass the CDL exam and become employees of SRT. The classes will be located at the Four States Fairgrounds Arena in Texarkana, courtesy of Jimmy Curtis, President and CEO.
The program consists of faculty members, Phillip Jones, Carlos Clark, Kevin Brazil and Program Coordinator Ashley Sanders.
