Helping students succeed has always been the goal of the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. With that focus in mind, the UACCH Director of Student Relations has identified a need concerning future students. Many new students are unable to attend UACCH New Student Orientation due to work schedule or personal schedule conflicts. In an attempt to better serve new students, a plan was put into effect in the summer of 2013 to create a new student orientation website. Realizing this is an important need for our students, UACCH Director of Student Relations, Leigh Quillin, teamed up with UACCH Advertising and Publications Coordinator, Casey Curtis, and immediately began work on a new student orientation website for the fall 2013 semester.
After many hours of brainstorming and hard-work, the team had a new student orientation website built in less than one month. The website became a huge success not only for students who could not attend new student orientation but also for those who did. Students were encouraged to browse the website even if they planned to attend orientation in person. This allowed them to become more acquainted and comfortable with the campus before they arrived. The website includes need-to-know information, helpful tips, and instructional videos. After browsing the site, students take a review quiz that allows them to receive a free t-shirt for their efforts.
The work of these two UACCH employees has paid off not only by giving students a greater opportunity to succeed but also with a national gold medal. Higher Ed Marketing, publisher of the Higher Education Marketing Report, has awarded its 2013 National Gold Medal Award for admissions website or microsite to the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope’s New Student Orientation Website. A national panel of industry specialists reviewed each entry; judging creativity, marketing execution, and message impact. This is the 29th year Higher Ed Marketing has hosted this competition recognizing efforts in the field of education among two and four year universities across America.
UACCH is proud to have employees who strive to reach the goals of the institution. This project is just one small sample of how UACCH employees strive to help students build a bridge to a brighter future. Congratulations to Leigh and Casey on winning this award.
