The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana collected enough donations Tuesday to supply thirty-seven care packages to troops in Afghanistan. Also, more than $850 was donated to pay for postage to ship the packages. There were enough donated funds left over to provide an additional seven care packages for Army Reserve soldiers from the Texarkana area that are deployed to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq and Korea.
According to UAHT Speech Instructor Chelsea Slack, “Supporting troops lets them know their sacrifice is appreciated.” Slack is also one of the Fine Arts Club advisers who helped organize the UAHT Supports the Troops effort. Slack continued, “My husband is in the military, so I know how much the troops appreciate anything those of us here at home can do for them. Being deployed during the holidays is one of the hardest times for troops since they don’t get to come home and spend time with their families.”
UAHT Fine Arts Instructor Lisa Pennington said, “The UAHT Fine Arts Club was formed for the purpose of giving students an outlet for creative expression. This does not mean just making art! Our club participates in many activities on campus and also works to establish relationships within our community. FAC members use their creativity to help those in need. Supporting our troops in Afghanistan is just one project this year’s FAC is excited to be a part of.”
Pennington and Slack both added, “The entire Fine Arts club would like to express their thanks to everyone who participated in supporting our troops with these care packages.”
