President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site, in partnership with the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope, presents “Hope for Humanity Film Festival” on Friday, May 4th and Saturday May 5th, 2012 at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope Auditorium, located at 2500 South Main in Hope.

The festival features documentaries and films related to human rights. The festival is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and can be picked up at the President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site Visitor Center. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, May 4th, 2012

6:00 p.m. –

Pedro (2009) Directed by Nick Oceano and Produced by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (93 min.) Pedro Zamora captured the hearts of millions on the San Francisco edition on MTV’s The Real World in 1994 and became a national symbol for living with HIV and dying of AIDs. President Bill Clinton stated in the introduction of the film “I’m very glad to have known Pedro, and I’m grateful that his life has been able to inspire and enrich so many others.”

10:00 a.m.-Disney’s

Ruby Bridges (1998) (90 min.) The true story of six- year- old Ruby Bridges, one of the first Black students to integrate a public elementary school in New Orleans.

Note: the 10:00 showing will be preceded by a student produced documentary,

Quality of Opportunity (2011), written by Samuel Hoskins and Clayton Gentry and produced in conjunction with the Little Rock Central High School National Historical Site Youth Leadership Academy and Arkansas Educational Television Network.

12:30 p.m.-

Viva La Causa (2008) Directed by Bill Brummel and Alono F. Mayo and Produced by Bill Brummel (40 min.) This film tells the story of Cesar Chavez and a great moment for social justice. Viva La Causa tells the story of a dedicated coalition of people from diverse classes, races and religions who stood together for justice, proving that the mightiest walls of oppression can be toppled when people are united and their cause is just.

Dreaming For Justice (2011), written by Roberto Ruiz and Produced in conjunction with the Little Rock Central High School National Historical Site Youth Leadership Academy and Arkansas Educational Television Network. (4 min.)

2:00 p.m.

– Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History (2010) Directed by Bill Brummel and Geoffrey Sharp and Produced by Bill Brummel (39 min.). This is an inspiring story of a young gay man who took a stand against the bullying he experienced in school. He went to court and fought for the right for all students to feel safe at school. His inspiring story offers hope for the millions of gay and lesbian students who still do not feel safe at school.

3:00 p.m. –

12 Stones (2009) Directed by Sandy Smolan and Produced by Bill Medsker

and Heifer International (22 min.) . A deeply moving documentary that captures the amazing journey of a group of women in southern Nepal—a country where running water and electricity are luxuries and most people live below the poverty line—to assert their economic independence and provide for each of their family.

4:00 p.m. –

What a Girl Wants (2002) Directed by Jacob Bricca and Produced by Elizabeth Massie (33 min.). Eleven girls, ages 8-16, discuss their views on media and culture and its impact on their daily lives.

5:00 p.m.

– Supersize Me (2004) Directed by Morgan Spurlock and produced by Kevin Jones (100 min). Documentarian Morgan Spurlock conducts an unscientific experiment using himself as the guinea pig: eat only McDonald’s for thirty days, three meals a day, to demonstrate the effects of eating fast food and the choices available particularly to low income people. Along the way, he also visits schools across the country to find out what choices students have for their lunches.
